SDI received a request from a client to send two Security Drivers and a full security team to a location in mainland Spain to deliver high value assets to a client

This entailed the team travelling by air and hiring cars in-country to make the delivery, as no suitable service providers could be found in the area that met the client’s insurers requirements. The team spent three days in total in the area carrying out recce’s, planning and all the usual requirements to enable such a secure escort to be made in safety. The temperature nudged 41 degrees on the day of the delivery to the client, so the team were thankful for the cars air conditioning! The mobile trackers worked well on both vehicles with the admin staff in London able to see their exact location at all times. The delivery was made without incident. At the end of the month, the team found themselves high in the Swiss Alps with overnight temperatures dropping to minus 7. This trip involved driving and using cog-wheel trains and cable cars and reaching the Jungfraujoch, the Top of Europe.

CATOCA official visit

CATOCA official visit. In 1990 “Total Recall”, the science fiction movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, visualized the technology that didn’t exist at that time – a full body security scanner. In the shots below one can see how Schwarzenegger undergoes an “X-ray inspection” at the customs and border control zone in order to detect prohibited or dangerous items such as firearms hidden under his clothes: Not long after ADANI invented this technology and implemented it in a unique device – a personal X-ray inspection system with an extremely low radiation dose. In the photo below one can see the first production model of CONPASS. CONPASS is an innovative X-ray system for scanning people and preventing illicit trafficking of weapons, explosives, drugs and other contraband. The first customer of this unique scanner under the serial number 001 was CATOCA diamond mine from Angola searching in 1999 the solution to prevent the theft of diamonds. Today these CONPASS units are still working to a high standard. During the 20 years of cooperation with CATOCA the CONPASS units installed have made over 1 million scans. These have helped significantly lowering and preventing the number of thefts. While visiting ADANI the representatives of CATOCA got acquainted with the latest […]
Personal computer/Smart card or PC/SC

Personal computer/Smart card or PC/SC is a standard that allows computers to interface with smartcards, and is available on most operating systems, including Windows and Linux. It has been developed to facilitate the introduction of smart cards into the world of PCs. The advantage of PC/SC is that applications do not have to connect through a specific and different interface of the smart card reader to communicate with the smart card. This application can function with any reader that complies with the PC/SC standard. At the time that PC/SC was designed, smartcards were only contact cards. When it comes to RFID (such as Mifare or LEGIC for instance), RFID readers often fail to comply with PC/SC. Fortunately, ProxTech’s MULTITOP PC/SC readers enables the use of MIFARE or LEGIC cards on PC/SC systems, by using an embedded interpreter, converting “classical smartcard commands” into efficient sequences to use with RFID tags. With the MULTITOP PC/SC reader, every smartcard or RFID application which uses the unique serial number according to PCSC 2.01, is now able to access also the proprietary technology of LEGIC advant and LEGIC prime without any further effort. In order to allow the use of the complete functions set of […]
ProxTech International has released its latest development in NFC/RFID read-/write systems : the COMPACT-ISO modules.

ProxTech International has released its latest development in NFC/RFID read-/write systems : the COMPACT-ISO modules. With the newest terminals on the market becoming smaller by the minute, space has become a very important criterion when selecting the best suited integration module for RFID applications. Also the RFID technology by the module has won on importance. Since many end-users ae already making use of RFID for various applications, it is clear that they will be very reluctant to throw all their existing tags out to have them replaced by other ones, simply because your new terminal is not supporting their tags. COMPACT-ISO is bringing a solution for both these issues ! The multi-ISO COMPACT module is a modern 13.56 MHz RFID module, supporting simultaneously ISO14443A, ISO15693 and NFC technologies and is extremely small sized : 30,5 x 25,5 x 3,8 mm. COMPACT-ISO is developed with special attention for highest technical integration flexibility (e.g.: 3,3 Vdc to 5,0 Vdc) and UART or USB interface for data output. This extremely versatile and small-sized 13.56 MHz RFID module can thus easily be integrated in different applications such as time & attendance terminals, POS systems, vending machines, handheld and desktop readers, … MAIN FEATURES : […]

Innovative has recently launched a new module called “Automatic Alarm Receiving Centre”. In that regard, we are releasing a short video demonstrating how Automatic ARC works

Innovative has recently launched a new module called “Automatic Alarm Receiving Centre”. In that regard, we are releasing a short video demonstrating how Automatic ARC works. Automatic Alarm Receiving Centre is a module, which in case of an alarm, automatically begins dialing contacts – one by one. The first contact to answer the call will be informed by a reader that an alarm has been generated on a given zone. The contact is then presented with different options, such as disposing of the alarm, requesting a guard be dispatched to the address or talking to an operator at the ARC. This way, contacts themselves now have the opportunity to initially “screen” an alarm in order to determine its subsequent path. Watch the video here. Learn more about Automatic Alarm Receiving Centre here. Gallery

It’s 168 miles, or a four hour drive, from Wick in the North to Fort William in the South. Secondly, we had to contend with limited infrastructure in much of the area we were working in. While Inverness has a good infrastructure, the Scottish Highlands are one of the remotest areas in Britain and obviously this posed a number of challenges. I’m delighted we were able to meet each of these, and demonstrate the abilities of Vemotion.” With a state of the art CCTV control […]

How to Use Building Design to Increase Security Effectiveness

Did you know that adding security measures after the design process has reached the 35% designed phase can increase the cost of a construction project by 20%-30% in the short term and much more in the long term? Think about it. This factor is caused by the need to re-design and restructure the utility schemes so that the additional security features that are added can be accommodated. Adding security solutions at the beginning of a project may add a mere 2% to the overall project costs. Let’s look at why. Most buildings are designed for aesthetics and not for the threats that the building or occupants must face – whether those threats are man-made or from natural causes. Architects love to get their creative juices down on paper. The more intriguing the design the better they feel. On the other hand engineers, look at blueprints or plans and ask the question, why is this like that when it would be more logical if it were like this instead. When I joke with my engineer friends I recite this old axiom; Positive people see the glass as half-full, while negative people see it as half-empty. Engineers want to know why the […]

Mayflex Uncovers Fraudulent Activities

July 2017, Mayflex uncovers fraudulent activities whereby the fraudsters are pretending to work for accredited customers and have ordered goods to be shipped directly to bogus ‘end user’ sites. In a number of separate instances, the fraudsters have targeted accredited Paxton partners, they’ve called the Mayflex sales team saying that they are from the company, asked for quotes for various Paxton product codes and having created ‘copycat’ email addresses, to look very similar to those of the individual companies in question, to fool our teams into thinking that when the orders were placed that they were legitimate. The names of the individuals to look out for in these examples are Mike Andrews, Marvin Taylor and Ian Green – we have passed the information and details across to the police who are now pursuing this matter further. Commenting on the incident Martin Eccleston, Commercial Manager commented ‘We are taking further steps to help distinguish these fraudulent activities at the earliest stages and where products are being delivered directly on site, in future we will put further checks in place to check that the order is genuine before being shipped. This won’t cause any delay to our customers and orders will be […]
Weary of Relentless Bad News Stories? British Manufacturing Has the Antidote

Weary of Relentless Bad News Stories? British Manufacturing Has the Antidote. Martyn Ingram is the Group Director of Morgan GRP, the parent company of Morgan Marine and Envico Engineering. Morgan Marine is a leading manufacturer of security housings, enclosures and products designed to protect Critical National Infrastructure in the utilities, construction, nuclear, rail and renewables sectors – as a group of companies, between 80 and 90 percent of the power distributed in mainland UK has passed through one of their enclosures. Here, Martyn talks about the dangers of Britain talking itself into a slump – and how the public perception of the UK’s output, buoyancy and stability would be far more positive, and more accurate, if they could be persuaded to tune into the legion of good news stories unfolding within manufacturing and engineering. If you are in the habit of spending time on social media, tuning in to the evening news, or reading a national newspaper, you might be forgiven for thinking Britain’s economy, productivity and prospects are on their last legs. While we are living in challenging times, has there ever been an era when it has been a simple task to balance the British economy, the needs of a growing and diverse populace, and the many and various […]
LEGIC and MIFARE DESFire modules with USB interface

ProxTech International, developer of NFC/RFID read-/write systems, is offering two new RFID COMPACT modules, based on LEGIC and NXP reader chips. LEGIC and MIFARE DESFire modules with USB interface Modern applications often require versatile modules for integration in a wide range of terminals and machines. This integration is commonly done via standard communication methods such as USB or serial RS23 TTL or RS485 interfaces. Mostly also space is a very important criterium, thus making dimensions of the integration module very important. To meet these modern requirements, extremely small compact modules have been developed for LEGIC, MIFARE and MIFARE DESFire applications with integrated USB interface. The RFID LEGIC module and the RFID Mifare module are pin-compatible, i.e. the modules are interchangeable one-to-one, offering significant advantages of flexibility of integration of RFID. During the development, special goals were set for compact dimensions (31 x 26 x 4 mm) and technical integration flexibility (3.3 V DC to 5,0V DC). For customizations, 4 digital I/O ports are optionally available for the user. The simple command structure makes it possible to integrate the module in a wide range of applications without much effort. The data transfer is done standard via USB (HID mode, keyboard emulation) […]

SELECTION – Choose the right technology; as a rule of thumb use UHF for big cities and VHF for more rural settings. HEIGHT – The more height you can get for your antenna the further you will be able to communicate. MOVEMENT – Movement clears blackspots; even moving a few metres can make the difference between a call getting through or not. GO DIGITAL – Analogue radios are still with us and will be for a long time, but the future is digital. ACCESSORISE – Research audio accessories and choose the right one for the task; having a variety to choose from gives you options. BATTERIES – Make sure you have enough for the duration of the task; two spare batteries per radio is ideal and will give 24 hour usage. CHARGING – As with laptops and tablets and phones, charge your batteries whenever you get the chance. ANTENNAS – Consider different antenna options for both portables (handhelds) and mobiles giving you operational flexibility. […]

Secure Mobile Phones – an affordable solution. We are often asked to advise clients on which is the best system to ensure secure communications when using their mobile or desk based telephones. The selection is difficult, and there are as many pitfalls as there are choices. Many options are simply not as secure as they claim to be, others skirt round the security issues present when using third party servers for traffic routing and key identification. You are unlikely to be told that the ‘secure voice’ app you downloaded is only really as secure as the device onto which it is loaded, and as if this is not enough, the price is often the key decider, with many of the better solutions being simply too expensive. But that has now changed. In association with 5Pro Software, G6 has launched the LYNX7 secure voice service. This system is fully secure using the latest in encryption and protection techniques. We guarantee never to use 3rd party servers for any part of the call set-up or routing and all LYNX7 devices are fully hardened to ensure that Trojans, Viruses and Spyware simply cannot find their way onto the terminal. The LYNX7 Subscription Service […]
How do you communicate?

How do you communicate? Communications is vital to our everyday lives, and there are so many ways in which we do it: voice, text, email, tweets, pokes, VIBER, Tikl, WhatsApp, BBM the list is virtually endless. So much do we take the ability to communicate for granted, that it is often overlooked in the planning phase of operations where, in reality, it should take centre stage. Take the military scenario as an example. When an operation begins, the very first thing that will be established is a communications link between the front line and those directing operations. Without it the commanders can neither issue instructions to their forces, nor receive intelligence feedback; without communications they are deaf, dumb, blind and vulnerable and this is true for every other situation from the Boardroom to the Ops Room. When planning an operation in a hostile environment communications takes priority because we expect to have to provide it for ourselves, and this mind-set should be extended to any environment friendly or hostile: sadly that doesn’t always happen and many an operation in a sleepy, leafy suburb has floundered for this very reason. So what are some of the things we should consider from […]

Purple Parking Improves Control with Morse Watchmans Key Management Solutions

London, England (June 21, 2016) – Purple Parking, the largest off airport car park operator in the UK, has improved operations and increased efficiency at London’s Heathrow Airport using Morse Watchmans’ KeyWatcher key management system. With their 38 distinctive purple buses, numerous company cars and 110 drivers on site at the five-terminal airport, Purple Parking uses their automated KeyWatcher system to control vehicle usage and improve driver accountability. The KeyWatcher system is used to regulate, store and track keys for vehicles used to transport customers between the various Purple Parking facilities and the airport. Keys are kept in the tamper-proof cabinet when not in use, and only pre-programmed authorized users can access a vehicle key during their working hours. All access activity is automatically recorded, allowing management to view live or recorded data showing which keys are out and with whom, and when the keys were returned or are scheduled to be returned. To help ensure operational control, if a key is returned late, an alert is sent to management via email or SMS text. “The KeyWatcher thoroughly suits our purpose at the airport,” says Jim Betchley, Transportation Manager at Purple Parking. “Among other features, the tracking and reporting functions […]

Electronic pickpocketing is on the rise now

Many UK businesses believe that they are taking the correct security precautions by using Electronic Access Control cards. However, many users are scarily unaware that these cards can be easily cloned in a matter of seconds from just a short distance away, allowing criminals to partake in electronic pickpocketing – gain easy access to your premises. This is achieved by thieves using easily accessible devices to scan and retrieve information from the cards Radio Frequency Identification chip (known as RFID.) This chip works by responding automatically to a signal sent out by a reader once within range. The chip then gives out the encrypted access code, the door reader recognises the code and unlocks. What people are unaware of, however, is that the access card carried by staff, visitors or contractors may give up its code to ANY reader operating on that radio frequency. Therefore, while your buildings electronic ‘keys’ are being carried, often visibly, by the holder, a third party with a concealed scanner can scan targeted RFID enabled access cards and write that scan to a blank card. RFID Secure Ltd, is presenting a secure solution to prevent electronic pickpocketing – the Classic BloxProx Badgeholder. The simple but […]

Fire Safes – Everything You Should Know

1. What is a fire safes? Fire safes are generally broken down into three main categories: Those which will protect paper documents; digital media such as USB sticks or DVDs; or magnetic data tapes such as LTOs, DAT tapes or DLTs. Fire safes and data safes are built differently to protect their contents, as each can withstand different levels of heat: Paper: 177 °C / 350 °F Digital: 120 °C / 248 °F Data: 52 °C / 125 °F Data tapes are sensitive, easily damaged and susceptible to low levels of heat or humidity. The manufacturers recommend maximum exposure to heat must not exceed 52°C or humidity levels of greater than 85%. Thus, data safes are designed to keep the inside of the safe below 85% humidity, whilst also maintaining an internal temperature below 52°C (or about half that of a cup of coffee). 2. Will they protect against a burglar? Yes, they are still a safe at the end of the end of the day and many fire safes are suitable for secure storage for cash and valuables too. Much of what the average house owner keeps in a fire safe is often important documents like passports, house and […]
An Argument for Unannounced (Virtual) Drills

An Argument for Unannounced (Virtual) Drills. Events can be separated into two categories – conventional and unconventional. Conventional events happen all the time; we plan for their likelihood, stock equipment and materials, and train accordingly. These events because we’ve prepared for them are usually managed pretty effectively. Unconventional events, on the other hand are just that – unconventional. The thought is they are rare events and that traditional mechanism will work. Both are simply not true. Just read the paper or watch the news. Rare events happen all the time. When was the last time you heard a newscaster say, “That was a thousand year event”? Due to the complex nature of today’s societies, an unconventional event overwhelms resources from the onset and an impact on more than one portion of society; such as, the energy sector directly affects the banking sector or transportation sector and so on. This ripple effect will become even more pronounced in the future as societies and communities increase in population due to the migration from agriculture to the city. An unconventional event in the 21st century presents us with several opportunities, 1) we have to change our mindset in the way we train, and […]

Veracity delivers essential paper on the critical differences between IT data and Video data at the San Diego Security Show

Prestwick, 18th January 2017 – Veracity, a leading provider of innovative, intelligent solutions that solve real-world IP video challenges in transmission, storage and display, takes a leading slot in delivering a Paper explaining the critical differences which exist between IT data and Video data, exposing misconceptions that are common across the surveillance industry. Veracity will be both presenting and exhibiting at the San Diego Security Show which is being held at the Town and Country Convention Center in San Diego, CA., on January 25th and 26th, 2017. “Larger numbers of cameras, generating greater image quality and longer retention times for today’s safer cities, all point towards the need for very high capacity storage systems for video surveillance data. These storage systems can often represent 40% to 50% of the overall system cost, so the choice of storage solution is critical” says John Kampfhenkel, Director of Technical Sales for Veracity. “Furthermore, traditional storage solutions are a high-maintenance component of the system and frequently have the shortest useful lifetime, leading to increased TCO.” John’s presentation highlights that, in almost all other areas of business, the customers’ understanding of key differences between two engineered products would lead them to choose the one most […]

Safeguarding Critical National Infrastructure Against Intrusion or Attack

With the issue of national security at the front of everyone’s mind, utility companies and their suppliers, not to mention Government ministers and advisors, have never been more aware of the importance of keeping the nation’s water supply and its critical national infrastructure and equipment secure. The Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure (CPNI) has advised public sector organisations which own parts of the Critical National Infrastructure, on design improvements to protect them from the effects of chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CRBN) agents. And measures have been taken by all of our water companies to safeguard against chemical and physical attack. All water utilities new build sites will be obliged to meet the current Government directives but, of course, the far bigger challenges come from bringing existing, ageing sites up to date so they too meet these high standards. Sue Paton, Sales and Commercial Director of Morgan Marine, who design, engineer and manufacture security housings from their Carmarthenshire HQ, alongside a wide range of LPCB accredited product such as doors, access covers, barsets and cages for the utilities industries, says: “Much work has been done across Britain to bring our water infrastructure up to date. “But of course […]

Keeping Criminals from Acting Criminal

Criminals hate lights. It probably has something to do with the fact that they think they’ll get caught. In well-lit areas, there is certainly a higher probability that someone will notice their presence, unwanted activity and report it. After all, that’s what lighting is all about – the ability to assess behavior. If lighting in an area is good then there is a higher probability that people will frequent the space, not because they can see (although helpful) but because they feel safe. Criminals activity can be effectively reduced and deterred through a process called Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED). CPTED is not new; it’s been around since the early 90s. What is new is the effective use of lighting in influencing behaviors. Recent research shows us that “our caveman instincts” can be influenced to a significant degree by the amount of luminosity in our surrounding environment. Natural light tells us when to sleep, wake-up and eat. Artificial lighting can change that to some degree, so we stay up later than we should. It can even affect our mood and change our behavior. Why do you think high end restaurants are dimly lit. It’s not because they don’t want […]

Protecting Historical and Newer Buildings in the Age of Terrorism

Protecting Historical and Newer Buildings in the Age of Terrorism. The beautiful Gulfo di Napoli (Bay of Naples) sets the stage for a discussion on Using Building Design to Reduce the Effects of Terrorist Attack. Architects, engineers, facility managers, planners and security professionals, from government agencies and the private sector, meet to discuss proven principles for the high occupancy built-up environment. They will share their lessons learned. Our case study review will be of the European Simulation and Validation Center (ESVC) in Ede, The Netherlands. The study involved reducing the risk of active shooter threats to students and staff. Naples, with all of its historically important buildings is the perfect backdrop as we discuss preserving the cultural identity of facilities while at the same time incorporating modern-day crime prevention and antiterrorism guidelines. “Unless community leaders have a strategic plan, their efforts in meeting the ever increasing needs of the urban environment will become a patch-work of ideas and risk reduction will be marginal, at best. As urban centers of the future increase in population so will the demand for functionality on a multitude of levels. This workshop addresses the security quotient of the Smart Cities formula”, says Doug Haines, course […]
Frankston City Council

Situation Frankston is a dynamic municipality within the southern suburbs of Melbourne, Australia. In recent years the Victorian state government has invested significantly to further enhance this enviable bayside location as a designated tourist destination. With a population already over 120,000 and set to rapidly grow, Frankston City Council desperately needed to upgrade and streamline their security management system and processes. Before the upgrade, each of the Council’s 10 different sites had a standalone Inner Range Concept 4000/Insight solution with each site managing its own cardholders. Accuracy of cardholder data across the 10 sites was a real concern due to the manual process required to update records. Task The requirements for Frankston City Council were simple but two-fold: they needed a robust and user-friendly system that would build upon the existing Concept 4000 infrastructure and a single system that would easily accommodate a multi-site architecture, thus reducing the inefficiencies of individually managing 10 sites. It was also important that the new system was future proof with a scalable modular design, could integrate with third party systems if required, was competitively priced with no lock-in contracts (or annual fees) and could seamlessly utilise the Council’s existing wired, wireless and WAN based […]
Want to Sell More Safes this Month

Want to Sell More Safes this Month – Act Now. Traditionally many government subsidised or fully funded authorities are provided with an annual budget that runs from 1st April to 31st March. This means that they often try to ensure every penny of their budget for the current financial year is spent by the end of March, to make sure that their budget is fully replenished for the following financial year. So, if you are a supplier to the public sector then let these customers know that they can buy Phoenix Safes from you. Products such as our Fire Ranger FS1510 Series Fire Cupboards and the FS2250 Series World Class Vertical Fire Files sell fast in March as they provide large storage capacities for the protection of paper records. These kinds of products are ideal for the ‘Budget Burn’ that many of these organisations do in March. Gallery
Fly-tipper hit with £850 bill advised to head to ‘cheaper’ council recycling site

A rubbish dumper caught at a fly-tipping trouble spot was left with an £854 bill and told to use the council-run recycling centre which is ‘a lot cheaper’. Mahroof Madasar appeared in Nottingham Magistrates Court after he was been spotted on CCTV dumping waste at a car park Colwick Crossings. The 33-year-old, of Port Arthur Road, Sneinton, told the court he is now aware of the recycling centre on Redfield Road in Lenton. Presiding magistrate Stephen Dowling said: “We are proud of our city. This sort of thing is an awful problem and the city of Nottingham has its share of it. You have caused it this time.” The JP then asked him: “Are you aware of the household recycling site on Redfield Road? It’s a lot cheaper.” Madasar replied: “Definitely. I knew nothing at the time and have now found it is available.” He was fined £100 but must also pay Nottingham City Council’s costs of £734 plus a £20 government surcharge. The hearing was told that four bags of household rubbish were left in a corner of the car park at 10.32pm on April 3, 2016. Tamazin Wilson, prosecuting, said: “It is a fly tipping hotspot and the […]

Viva Las Vegas! Viva Security!

Security professionals join architects, engineers, planners and facility managers to discuss how they plan electronic security systems into projects they are working on and how to use building design in reducing the effects of terrorist attack. Both workshops run parallel to the enormously successful industry trade show ISC-West, sponsored by the Security Industry Association (SIA). Haines Security Solutions, Owner/CEO Doug Haines commented, “What better venue than at an event bringing more than 38,000 professionals together to see and talk about the latest security technologies. It seemed like a ‘no brainer’ to get them together to discuss their challenges, exchange ideas on lessons learned and share our experiences in developing mitigation strategies and integrating security technologies in to inhabited space. We’re looking forward to an extremely productive interdisciplinary dialogue”. During the Planning Electronic Security Systems for Buildings and Compounds workshop attendees will learn basic and advance concepts in the implementation of electronic technologies in securing facilities they are responsible for. Attendees will be very active as they “roll up their sleeves” to participant in a variety of group activities with industry peers. This 3-day workshop is 3-5 April. The Using Building Design to Reduce the Effects of Terrorist Attack workshop focuses […]
Design in preventing mass casualties

Design in preventing mass casualties. We all have a responsibility to ensure the places where people work and live will provide them relative safety from a variety of threats, natural and man-made, writes Doug Haines. Protecting people in occupied space is paramount to building design. Normally, this is done through a series of government regulations concerning building construction codes. The goal is to ensure people are protected from the elements and threats, and that the building itself doesn’t become the hazard. So, as part of the design process, everyone on the design team, has an inherit responsibility in applying strategies, whether regulatory or industry “best practice” that manages or mitigates threats to people in the buildings they occupy. Toward this goal, a concept that has been around since the late 1990s is Crime Prevention through Environmental Design. It is commonly known by its acronym CPTED. CPTED incorporates four principles of design. CPTED is founded on the idea that crime can be designed out of the environment. CPTED implements the following four approaches: • natural surveillance – the placement of physical features, activities and people in a way to maximize visibility; • natural access control – physically guiding people through a […]
