SHORT INCREDIBLE HISTORY
Technological innovation often starts with solving real-life issues. Veriff’s story is no different. At the age of 14, the founder of Veriff, Kaarel Kotkas, was living on a farm on the Estonian island Hiiumaa. For making hay for the cows, they used blue twine to tie up the hay bales. As the twine was non-biodegradable, Kaarel started looking for environmentally sound alternatives. He found it from an online store. Kaarel tried to buy it but the purchase was declined due to his young age. Instead of giving up, he photoshopped the data on his ID and changed his birth year. It worked and the biodegradable twine was shipped to Hiiumaa. Kaarel realized that even global conglomerates have intimidatingly low barriers to secure online identification.
Several years later when Kaarel was graduating from high school, he was also conducting a case study for Wise. His task was to find potential backdoors to access Wise with a false ID. Kaarel kept developing his case study and wrote code.
On October 20th, 2015 Veriff was registered as a one-man company. That’s how it all got started. A year later, the Co-Founder of Wise Taavet Hinrikus invested in Veriff.
